AI Icon Creator is our pick for the best AI app icon generator in 2026: it scored 82.5 out of 100 in our test of eight tools, ahead of appicon.co (66.5) and Pixelle (65.0). We make AI Icon Creator, so we published the scoring rules before testing and had two blind scorers mark the icons, and the right tool still depends on the job. This page is the short version in plain words. The full test of eight AI app icon generators has every score, file list and terms line.
What is the best AI app icon generator in 2026?
Pick by the job. This table names one tool for each job and says whether we tested it.
| What you need | Pick | Why | Tested by us |
|---|---|---|---|
| An icon you can ship on iOS, Android and web | AI Icon Creator | Highest score, 82.5 of 100, and the fullest export pack | Yes |
| A free try with no account | appicon.co | Four images a day, no account for the first batch, but it publishes no terms | Yes |
| The most free credits | Pixelle | Its free credits covered every brief, the edit and the export | Yes |
| Editable vector artwork | Recraft | Documents SVG export; its free plan's output is public and not licensed for commercial use | No |
| A logo and a brand kit | Looka | Built for logos; its help centre has no app icon sizes | No |
| Only the sizes for an icon you already have | A resizer | You do not need AI; our free app icon resizer does it | n/a |
We reviewed Recraft and Looka from their own pages and independent sources, and we did not test them. We checked those facts on 13 October 2026. Prices and free allowances change.
How did we test them?
We tested eight AI app icon generators between 10 and 13 October 2026, on their free tiers only. We paid for nothing, and no tool paid to be included.
- The same three briefs for everyone: a task planner, a fitness app and a puzzle game with a cat mascot.
- One colour edit and one export per tool, with every file in the download listed.
- A 100-point score: looks 30, small-size legibility 18, the edit 12, export files 20, price and licence 20.
- Blind scoring: an experienced UI/UX designer on our team and an independent AI assistant marked the icons without knowing which tool made which. They disagreed about first place, and both sets of marks are published.
The full test gives the exact briefs, the rules we froze before testing and every change we logged. Our rules for every test are on how we test and update our content.
What were the scores?
Three of the eight tools finished every test: AI Icon Creator with 82.5 out of 100, appicon.co with 66.5 and Pixelle with 65.0. The other five ran out of free credits first, so we describe what they did but give no total.

Second place is close. appicon.co's edit ran on free credits from a second service, and without those points it would trail Pixelle. The full test explains this, and shows that AI Icon Creator stays first under three other ways of weighting the same scores.
What surprised us?
- No tool exported iOS dark and tinted icons. Since iOS 18 an app icon can have dark and tinted versions, and none of the eight packs included them. Apple's Xcode documentation says Xcode can generate them from one 1024 px image, so a missing variant costs you control, not a launch.
- Only one tool, AI Icon Creator, exported SVG, and only on a Pro or Max plan or with a credit pack. Of the 15 tools we reviewed but did not test, five document SVG output from a prompt.
- Small sizes are harsh. Only 10 of 30 ratings called an icon clear at 16 px, against 23 of 30 at 64 px. Thin lines and many small parts disappeared first.
- Seven of the eight tools say you may use the icons commercially. appicon.co publishes no terms, so it has no written statement either way.
When should you pick something else?
- You need vector artwork: look at Recraft or Adobe Firefly, which document SVG output. We did not test either.
- You are making a game: try more than one tool. On our cat mascot brief appicon.co narrowly led AI Icon Creator, 14.0 against 13.5 of 16.
- You are weighing AI against hiring someone: our guide to hiring an icon designer, using AI or doing it yourself sets out the trade-offs.
What are the limits of this test?
This was one run of each tool on three briefs, on the free tier, and one of the eight tools is ours. Another brief, a paid plan or a second try could change a result. That is why the full test publishes every score, file list and source.
Where is the full test?
Best AI App Icon Generators in 2026: 8 Tested, 15 Reviewed covers the scores and where our two scorers disagreed, a small-size test at 64, 32 and 16 px, a section on each of the eight tools, which tools export iOS, Android and web packs, which can export SVG, what each tool's terms say about commercial use, and 15 more tools we reviewed but did not test.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI app icon generator in 2026?
The best AI app icon generator in 2026, in AI Icon Creator's test of eight tools on the same three briefs, was AI Icon Creator, with 82.5 out of 100 and the fullest export pack. The right pick still depends on the job: appicon.co is the easiest free try, Pixelle gave the most free credits, and for vector artwork we would look at Recraft, which we did not test.
Which AI app icon generator should I use?
Use AI Icon Creator if you need an icon you can ship on iOS, Android and the web, appicon.co for a free try with no account for the first batch, Pixelle for the most free credits, and a resizer if you only need sizes for an icon you already have. We tested those three generators; for vector artwork or logos we reviewed Recraft and Looka but did not test them.
Are AI app icon generators free?
Every tool in our test had a free way in, but few let us finish. Pixelle's free credits covered all three briefs, the edit and the export, and appicon.co gives four images a day and needs no account for the first batch. Five tools ran out of free credits before the test ended. Plans and credits change, so check each tool's own page.
Can I use an AI-generated app icon commercially?
Seven of the eight tools we tested say in their terms that you may use the icons commercially, and appicon.co publishes no terms at all. Rules on AI-generated works differ between countries, and a symbol can still infringe a trademark, so check the terms and search before you use an icon as a brand mark. This is not legal advice.
