The typical top free iPhone app icon in October 2026 is flat, built around one symbol, uses two main colours or fewer and carries no text: 53% of the 1,001 icons we studied are flat, 50% are built around a symbol, 67% use two main colours or fewer and 70% have no text. Games are the exception. In AI Icon Creator's study, 84% of game icons are 3D, illustrated or photographic artwork, against 19% in the other 19 categories.

This is our first State of App Icons. We took the US App Store's free charts on 12 October 2026, the all-apps top 100 and the top 50 free apps in each of 20 categories, measured every icon's colours, background, contrast and small-size detail by computer, and had AI assistants code its style, main element and text from the icon alone. The icons themselves aren't reproduced here, only the statistics. You can download the data as a CSV.

What does the typical top app icon look like?

The typical top free app icon is a flat symbol on one or two colours with no words, and about three in ten icons fit that recipe exactly. This table gives each trait as a share of the 1,001 different apps in our data.

How did we study 1,001 app icons?

We studied the icons of the free apps on 21 US App Store charts on 12 October 2026: the all-apps top 100 and the top 50 in each of 20 categories. That is 1,100 chart entries and 1,001 different apps, because 99 of the top 100 also appear on a category chart. The 20 categories are Business, Education, Entertainment, Finance, Food & Drink, Games, Health & Fitness, Lifestyle, Medical, Music, Navigation, News, Photo & Video, Productivity, Shopping, Social Networking, Sports, Travel, Utilities and Weather. We downloaded the icons for analysis only.

A script measured four things on every icon. It counted the main colours with the method from our study of app icon colours by category. It found the background colour family and the contrast between the subject and the background. It measured how much of the icon changes when it is shrunk to its real size in iPhone Settings, 29 pt, the way we did in our study of what survives at 29 pt.

AI assistants coded three things: the style (flat, gradient, 3D, illustrated or photo), the main element (a symbol, letter, wordmark, character or scene) and whether the icon contains text of two or more letters. Eleven coders each judged 100 icons from numbered contact sheets with no app names, following one written guide. A twelfth coder repeated 100 of the same icons on its own. The two agreed on 92% of main elements, on 100% of the text calls and on 85% of styles. The disagreements were mostly about whether a stylised game character is 3D or illustrated, so we group those two where it matters. An AI assistant also spot-checked 40 random icons and found no clear error, only borderline style calls. No person coded these icons. On the all-apps top 100, the coding agrees with the separate coding we did for the 29 pt study on 85 of the 89 main elements that study could settle.

What artwork style do top app icons use?

Flat artwork is the default for top app icons: 53% of the 1,001 icons are flat, 25% use a visible gradient, 17% are 3D, 4% are illustrated and 1% are photographs. Flat and gradient together make 78%, and the all-apps top 100 is flatter still, at 56% flat and 27% gradient.

Categories differ a lot. Shopping (80%), finance (76%) and food and drink (76%) are the flattest categories. Productivity is the only category where gradient icons (50%) outnumber flat ones (30%), followed by photo and video (46% gradient) and utilities (40%). Education has the most illustrated icons at 22%, and weather has the most photographs at 10%.

Games are the one category that looks different. In AI Icon Creator's data, 74% of game icons are 3D, 8% are illustrated and 2% are photographs, which makes 84% rendered or drawn artwork, against 19% in the other 19 categories. Only 14% of game icons are flat. They also use more colours and more characters than any other category.

What is at the centre of a top app icon?

A symbol is at the centre of half of all top app icons: 50% are built around a symbol such as a bell, a bag or a shape, 19% around a word, 18% around a single letter, 10% around a character and 2% around a scene. The mix shifts with the category.

  • Symbols lead in productivity (78%), utilities (72%) and music (66%).
  • Words lead in travel (42%), shopping (38%) and entertainment (34%).
  • Letters and monograms are most common in shopping (36%), finance (28%) and sports (28%).
  • Characters are 40% of game icons and 30% of education icons, which is where mascots live, and 20% of food and drink icons.

Our guide to app logo design explains how a logo, an initial and an app icon relate.

How many colours and which backgrounds do top app icons use?

Two thirds of top app icons use two main colours or fewer: 67% use two or fewer, 28% use three or four and 5% use five or more. In our colour study of 500 icons the share with two or fewer was 60%. Adding ten more categories lifts it to 67% across the 1,001 apps. Games are the outlier, with 14% at two colours or fewer and 52% at five or more.

Style and colour count go together. Of the flat icons, 88% use two colours or fewer; the share is 54% for gradient icons, 33% for 3D icons and 11% for illustrated ones.

The most common background colour is white, at 25%, then blue (23%), black (13%), red (9%), green (8%) and orange (6%). Productivity is the whitest category, with 60% white backgrounds, followed by medical (36%), utilities (34%) and navigation (32%). Black backgrounds are most common in entertainment, music and photo and video, at 28% each. Blue is the leading background colour for games, at 34%.

The contrast between the subject and the background has a median of 4.25:1, and 30.5% of the icons are below 3:1, so low contrast is common even among top apps. Sports icons have the highest median contrast (8.4:1) and games and utilities the lowest (3.0:1).

How much text do top app icons carry?

Three in ten top app icons contain text: 30% show a word or initials of two or more letters and 70% show none. Sports (52%), travel (50%) and shopping (46%) use text most. Education and productivity (12% each), weather and games (18% each) use it least. Every wordmark icon has text by definition, while only 10% of the symbol-led icons do.

Text costs detail at small sizes. At 29 pt, the size of an icon in iPhone Settings on a 2× screen, icons with text change a median 8.0% of their pixels, against 5.0% for icons without text. In our 29 pt study, text about 11% of the icon's height or more stayed readable, and smaller print blurred.

How do the 20 categories compare?

No two categories look alike, and each has a small set of habits. This table gives four numbers for each: the share of icons with text (Text), with two main colours or fewer (≤2 colours), with a white background (White bg) and with the one recipe of a flat symbol or letter, two colours or fewer and no text (Recipe).

Four traits for each category's top 50 free apps (AI Icon Creator's study, 12 October 2026)

Finance, medical and shopping are the most uniform categories: 40% of their icons follow the one recipe. Games follow it in 8% of cases, and productivity and utilities in 18%.

What should you do with these numbers?

The data describes what top apps do, not what causes downloads, so use it to see your category's habits and then decide how far to follow them.

  • Look up your category first. If you are in shopping, finance or food and drink, three quarters of the top icons are flat, so a flat symbol is the expected look. In games, expect a 3D or illustrated character.
  • Change one thing, not five. Productivity icons sit on white 60% of the time, so a coloured background is what stands out there. In entertainment, music and photo and video, black is common at 28%.
  • Skip text unless the name is short and big. Only 30% of top icons carry text, and text icons lose more detail at 29 pt. See our guide to small-size legibility.
  • Check contrast. Three in ten top icons are below 3:1, but the highest-contrast categories, sports and news, are well above it.
  • Pick the style on purpose. Our guide to choosing an app icon style compares the options, and you can try a few on your own subject:

What are the limits of this study?

This is one snapshot of one store on one day. The charts change daily, and we studied the US store's free charts only, so paid apps and other countries are not in the data. Top charts show what is popular, not what works: large brands are well represented, and an icon can rank high because of the app behind it.

The style classes have soft edges. The second coder agreed with the first on 85% of styles, and most of the disagreements were between 3D and illustrated game art or between flat and lightly shaded icons, so read each style share as accurate to within a few points. The coders were AI assistants, not people. The one-recipe definition is ours.
