To add a favicon in Wix, you need a Premium plan, a connected domain and a published site, then you open Settings, click Website settings, click Upload Image under Favicon, choose your file and save. Wix’s help page says the image should be square and a multiple of 48 px, such as 48 × 48 or 96 × 96, unless it’s an SVG. A 96 × 96 px PNG is a safe choice.
This guide covers what you need before the upload works, the steps, the size and format question, what to do if your logo is a wordmark, and why a favicon may not show.
What do you need before you can add a favicon in Wix?
You need three things before you can add a favicon in Wix: a Premium plan, a connected domain and a published site. Wix’s help page on adding a favicon says all three. Wix sites include a standard default favicon, and you can replace it once you’ve upgraded and connected a domain.

If you can’t find the upload, check these first. Wix’s second help page, on adding a favicon to your site’s pages in search results, answers “Why can’t I add a favicon to my site?” with one line: you need to publish your site first.
How do you add a favicon in Wix?
To add a favicon in Wix, go to Settings in your site’s dashboard, click Website settings, click Upload Image under Favicon, select or upload your image, click Choose File and then Save. Both Wix help pages describe the same path.

- Make a square image, a multiple of 48 px, as a PNG.
- Open Settings in your site’s dashboard.
- Click Website settings.
- Click Upload Image under Favicon. Choose a file you’ve already uploaded, or click Upload Images to add one from your computer, then click Choose File.
- Click Save, then open your live site and look at the tab.
Wix’s blog describes the same steps with slightly different wording: go to Settings, click Manage next to Favicon and then Upload Image. The button labels in the dashboard change from time to time, so look for the Favicon section.
What size and format should a Wix favicon be?
A Wix favicon should be a square PNG, and 96 × 96 px is a safe size. Wix’s help page says the size must be a multiple of 48 px square, such as 48 × 48 or 96 × 96, unless the file is an SVG, and that Google rescales the favicon to 16 × 16 px for search results. Wix’s own pages don’t agree with each other on everything, so here’s what each says:
| Page | What it says |
|---|---|
| Help: adding a favicon | A multiple of 48 px square unless SVG; formats ICO, PNG, JPG or SVG |
| Help: favicon in search results | A 1:1 image, Google recommends a multiple of 48 px; use a .jpg or .png |
| Wix blog: what is a favicon | The optimal creation size is 16 × 16 px; 32 × 32 px for a taskbar shortcut |
Google’s own favicon guidelines for Search, which we read on 4 October 2026, ask for a square favicon of at least 8 × 8 px and recommend one larger than 48 × 48 px. They don’t say “multiple of 48”. We covered the same difference in our Squarespace favicon guide. To satisfy every page at once, upload a square PNG of 96 × 96 px or 192 × 192 px, and check that it still reads at 16 × 16 px.
Wix’s help page also says a transparent background works if you upload a PNG, which helps for logos that aren’t square. A transparent symbol can vanish on a dark browser tab, though, so a solid tile is safer. Our Webflow favicon guide has a contrast test for that. Our favicon sizes guide explains every size a site needs.
What if your logo is a wordmark?
If your logo is a wordmark, don’t upload it as the favicon: a square favicon needs one bold shape or one letter. In AI Icon Creator’s test, a made-up bakery brand was prepared three ways as a 96 × 96 px upload and reduced to 16 × 16 px, the size Wix says Google shows in search results. The full lockup, fitted into a square, became an unreadable grey strip with a tiny symbol. A one-letter monogram on a solid tile and the croissant symbol alone both stayed recognisable.

So choose the part of your brand that is simplest: the symbol, or the first letter on a solid tile. Our guide to keeping an icon legible at small sizes has a 16 px checklist. If you don’t have a symbol yet, try one here:
Why isn’t my Wix favicon showing?
A Wix favicon usually doesn’t show because the site isn’t published, the plan or domain is missing, or the browser or Google hasn’t refreshed. Work through these:
- Check the requirements. You need a Premium plan, a connected domain and a published site.
- Open the live site. Look at the tab on your published address, not the editor.
- Clear the cache. Browsers hold on to old favicons, so reload in a private window.
- Check the image. Use a square PNG, a multiple of 48 px, that still reads at 16 × 16 px.
- Wait for Google. Wix says search engines update their version the next time they crawl your site, and that indexing is at Google’s discretion. Wix can’t say when or whether Google will show it.
- Resubmit your sitemap. Wix says you can re-submit it through Google Search Console to speed things up.
- Let Google index your home page. Wix says that if your favicon still doesn’t appear after some time, make sure search engines can index your home page.
What if you need an ICO file?
Wix takes ICO, PNG, JPG or SVG files according to one help page, and a .jpg or .png according to another, so a PNG is the safe choice. If you also need an .ico for another tool, our free PNG to ICO converter builds one from a single image, and our favicon converter makes a full favicon set. Building on another platform? Frequently asked questions
What size should a Wix favicon be?
A Wix favicon should be a square image whose size is a multiple of 48 px, such as 48 × 48 or 96 × 96 px, unless it is an SVG, according to Wix’s help page. A 96 × 96 px PNG meets Wix’s rule and is also larger than the 48 px that Google recommends. Check that it still reads at 16 × 16 px.
Can I add a favicon to a free Wix site?
You can’t add a favicon to a free Wix site, according to Wix’s help page, which says you need a Premium plan and a connected domain. You also need to publish the site first. Until then, Wix sites show Wix’s standard default favicon in the browser tab.
What file type should a Wix favicon be?
A Wix favicon should be a PNG, and a JPG also works, according to Wix’s help page on favicons in search results. Another Wix page lists ICO, PNG, JPG or SVG as suitable formats, so the pages differ. PNG is the safe choice, and it keeps a transparent background if your logo isn’t square.
Why isn’t my Wix favicon showing in Google?
Your Wix favicon may not show in Google because Google hasn’t recrawled your site yet, and indexing is at Google’s discretion. Wix says to make sure search engines can index your home page, and to re-submit your sitemap through Google Search Console. Google says favicon updates can take days to weeks.
How do I make a Wix favicon with AI?
To make a Wix favicon with AI, describe one simple symbol for your brand, generate it in a few styles, pick the one that stays clear at 16 px and export a square PNG of 96 × 96 px. In AI Icon Creator you can compare styles side by side, then upload the PNG under Favicon in your Wix settings.
